Fran Tarkenton knows better than most what it takes to succeed in a competitive arena. As one of the NFL's all time great competitors, his leadership skills have been tested time and time again. He was inducted into the National Football League and Collegiate Football Halls of Fame. He was an All-American athlete at the University of Georgia. As quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings, Fran took his team to the 1973, 1974 and 1976 Super Bowls. He set the all-time NFL passing records for the most touch-downs (342), the most yards gained passing (47,003) and the most completions. Those records stood for 17 years.
Fran is a hands-on entrepreneur. His companies are the result of his ideas and his direct day-to-day involvement. He funds the start-ups, develops the business plans and executes the strategies to build thriving businesses. Fran launched 20 companies over the last 25 years, the largest one reaching revenues of $142 million. He was a founding board member of Coca-Cola Enterprises. He also served on the Board of Directors of Sterling Software, Blimpie International and Pre-Paid Legal Services, Inc.
Since 1996, Fran's mission has been to be the trusted spokesperson for Small Business in America. He founded and still owns GoSmallBiz.com, a leading small business portal and consulting service provider. He also owns StarterSuccess.com, which provides a suite of cloud-based productivity applications for small business. The applications include CRM, HR, Web Builder and Business Plan tools. Fran is also a founding partner in one of the fastest growing conference call companies in the U.S. and is chairman of Tarkenton Financial, which focuses on insurance based retirement planning.
Fran is invited on a regular basis to appear on television news programs as an authority on matters related to small business. He has recently completed a book with co-author Scott Miller, entitled "One More Customer", which deals with the entrepreneurial mindset and sets out straight-forward messaging about the means to success in today's economy.
At age 70, Fran continues to advise and counsel businesses. He helps identify new opportunities in fast changing environments and develop innovative channels of distribution. Above all, he believes his work should embody his vision, values and his passion. His philosophy is that there is only one reason for a business to exist -- to provide products and services that enhance and improve the quality of life of its customer.
After graduating from Washington & Lee University in 1967, Scott Miller began a career in advertising and political consulting. As Creative Director of McCann-Erickson in New York, where he worked for such clients as Coca-Cola, Miller Brewing and Exxon, Mr. Miller won every major award for creative excellence in the advertising industry, including many Clio Awards and a Lion d'Or from the Cannes Film Festival.
In 1979 he founded Sawyer/Miller Group with David Sawyer. This strategic consulting group developed communications strategy for many political campaigns, corporations and institutions. Among Sawyer/Miller Group's clients: Corazon Aquino, Vaclav Havel, Coca-Cola, Microsoft, Miller Brewing, Boris Yeltsin, Drexel Burnham Lambert, Kim Dae Jung, Goldman-Sachs, Apple Computer, Virgilio Barco, USA for Africa/Hands Across America, Lech Walesa and The Better World Foundation. Sawyer/Miller also advised over 40 U.S. candidates for Governor or Senator and several Presidential campaigns.
In 1988, Sawyer/Miller Group was acquired by True North (now Interpublic Group) and Mr. Miller founded Core Strategy Group with Sergio Zyman. At Core, he worked on developing communications, marketing and branding strategies for clients like McDonalds, Verizon, CitiGroup, Microsoft, Coca-Cola, Google, News Corp., The Tribune Company, Highfields Capital, Rio Tinto, Cox Newspapers, Women & Co., The Newspaper Association of America, Knight-Ridder, The Southern Company, The Home Depot and The Walt Disney Company. He has also helped develop strategy for the successful political campaigns of Kim Dae Jung and Vicente Fox. In the 2004 U.S. election, Mr. Miller worked as a strategist for the Bush-Cheney campaign and the National Republican Senate Campaign Committee.
Mr. Miller provides commentary on political and corporate communications on the major television networks, and often lectures on communications, branding and insurgent strategies. He wrote Building Brandwidth with Sergio Zyman and The Underdog Advantage with David Morey for McGraw-Hill. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He was included on several Who's Who lists over the years, before realizing the listing is basically a marketing scam. Nevertheless, to his great embarrassment, he bought one faux marble plaque.
Scott Miller lives in Atlanta, Georgia and Carmel, California with his wife Denise and sons Tyler and Brett.
Just One Thing
There's just one thing. No matter what anybody tells you or tries to sell you, there's only one thing that matters. All you need to start and grow your business is a customer. Sounds easy; it isn't. If you don't wake up each morning with that goal, driving you forward, you'll find yourself out of business.
We Help You Win
The more years I live, the more aware I become that people don't talk to one another & don't share experiences or take the time to ask questions or probe, don't take the time to read or learn. We're going to talk with you. We're going to share our souls with you. Can we make you rich? NO! But we can give you the knowledge and the strength of our lifetime experience in building businesses from the dirt to success. Simply put, we'll give you a better chance to make it. Here's our hand; take it. It's time for one more customer, one more time!
